Our Transparent Financial Info

Triangular Comics & Zines is intended to be a business that truly supports the comics and zine corners of the local arts scene. Of course, that could mean lots of different things in theory and in practice, and no single business can be modeled on all those interpretations. (And some might even say that the business shouldn’t exist at all, which is a valid perspective!)

If nothing else I can at least be plain and direct about the approaches I am taking, so I’ve decided to post my financial information for public viewing. I’ll start it as a monthly update, though it’s possible I’ll find that another schedule makes more sense. To start, though, here are the expenses I anticipate having in order to run the business (which is a sole proprietorship).

ONGOING REGULAR EXPENSES:

  • WordPress web hosting: $33/year | $8.25/quarter | $2.75/month
  • WordPress domain registration: $12/year | $3/quarter | $1/month
  • WordPress email hosting: $35/year | $8.75/quarter | ~$2.92/month
  • ONGOING REGULAR TOTALS: $80/year | $20/quarter | ~$6.67/month

VARIABLE EXPENSES:

  • Inventory
  • Shipping supplies
  • Marketing (not including website)
  • Online sales:
    • Shipping (paid by customer; includes postage and cost of mailers)
    • Sales taxes (paid by customer)
    • Square fees: 3.3% of purchase + $0.30/transaction for online purchases
  • In-person eventS:
    • Registration fees
    • Tabling supplies
    • Travel, lodging, and food
    • Additional staffing
    • Sales taxes (I plan not to charge sales tax at in-person events, so I’ll have to pay that out of my earnings afterwards)
    • Square fees: 2.6% of purchase + $0.10/transaction for in-person fees

These expenses will overlap very slightly with the retail sales of my personal work via my own shop, but sales there are so minimal that I think it’ll be a negligible concern. I also removed the office supplies from the list above because I’m comfortable “sharing” those with myself from my graphic design services office supply shelf and not considering them a TCZ expense.
