I’ve decided to sell items with a 70/30 split (meaning 70% of an item’s retail price goes to the creator, and 30% goes to the shop) even though 60/40 and 50/50 are more common for booksellers.
From my perspective, 60/40 and 50/50 are totally fair! But because I’m a very small, online-only seller, I have much less overhead and can afford to shift the balance slightly more in the direction of the creator. In the unlikely event that I open a physical location someday, I may need to adjust the split to cover that increased overhead; that would be a VERY distant (and maybe just impossible) scenario, though, and anyone selling through my shop that isn’t comfortable with that can call it quits with no strings attached.
So if you’re thinking of selling your comics and zines at a shop that offers a 60/40 or 50/50 split, do it! Or at least don’t let that stop you — they’re industry standards, and I’m fortunate that I can operate a little differently.
